Bereits beim fröhlichen Freundschaftslunch mit Chinas Staatspräsident Hu Jintao hatte sich Gates vor ein paar Tagen nur mit einem vagen und diplomatischen Blabla bezüglich der Menschenrechtsverletzungen, Zensur und der Verfolgung von Onlineaktivisten in China geäußert.
Schließlich geht es bei so einem Meeting auch mehr darum, die eigene Handelsposition in China zu stärken oder das Raubkopiergeschäft in China einzudämmen:

This new era of an Internet-based economy also presents new challenges to all of us. Das man schlecht mit der Freiheitsfackel vor chinesischen Machthabern herumwedeln kann, wenn man in China selbst an der Zensur mitwirkt und das ja alles nicht so schlimm in China sei, meinte gestern auch Microsofts Seniorvizepräsident und Chief Technical Officer Craig Mundie:

There are literally hundreds of millions of Chinese people who have access to the Internet. The government here tends to control very selectively access to certain pieces of information. That's their prerogative.
The companies that do business here have to deal with the legal environment as it is but I think it is, in my view, widely overstated to think that the Chinese citizen today isn't benefiting from access to the Internet.
